Honest Boss, it was straight when I bolted it to the gate!! The trouble with sliding gates is that they have to run parallel and true. I think that this drive pack was installed for an electric sliding gate to operate in the Welsh Valleys.

This week’s challenge is to build a Rubber Band Powered Helicopter that can also go underwater.
This (surplus to requirements) Electric Traffic Barrier could be stripped down as the basis for our “Submacopter”. The Barriers Pulley and Gearbox are obviously part of the new driver train. The balance weights can be used for ballast. The road cones for buoyancy but buggered if I can spot a rubber band. It was on the UK news recently a man was jailed for four and a half years for stealing a JCB digger and running riot through streets and demolishing grave stones in a cemetery.

Battered and Bruised

This poor old Challenger Traffic Barrier has certainly seen better days and is looking very sorry for its self. The pole is bent, kinked and certainly no longer tubular. The bottom curtain is held on by goodness knows what? The stop discs are smashed and the cabinet lid is rusty.
This could now prove a costly repair, but it could have been avoided if the client had taken out a standard maintenance package out with Newgate.

Scene of crime officers have been to this Royal Mail site and have identified where the body was found! Did the visitor use the walkway? Did the barrier commit the crime? It almost sounds like a quote from the Cluedo game.
The postman, murdered in the car park, by the traffic barrier!! (Beats the lead piping and Professor plum any day) Newgate will have to “stamp” their authority on this one and mend the “post” or barrier first class.

Barrier Locking Facilities with a Difference

Newgates range of Manual Rising Arm Traffic Barriers come complete with locking facilities as standard. This is usually via a 25mm diameter locking bolt at the pivot end of the Barrier.
However, a lockable tip support post is also available, also as a standard.
This client has invented his own locking tip support and has incorporated a bicycle lock, never thought of that!!
My only question is, has he left his keys in the lock, and was there a bike attached to it?

Blue Peter Barriers

The PVC drop down curtains fitted to the Challenger Barrier arms here are a standard Newgate accessory. However, the elasticated bandages tying up the tip support posts and infill panel are most definitely not a standard accessory.
Who fitted them and what purpose do they serve??

Another tired Barrier, sadly neglected by its owner. If only the client had taken out a service contract with Newgate, then this automatic Challenger Barrier wouldn’t look so sorry for its self.
It’s clearly taped up, chipped and faded, even the barrier pole is missing. Yet, if properly maintained, the Challenger Barrier will last for years and will cover hundreds of thousands of operations. We have many instances on record of similar barriers achieving millions of operations!

“Bless It” – This old Newgate Manual Barrier looks very tied and past its best. With Flakey and faded paint, goodness knows what is covering the pole, a bent tip support post and a limp strainer wire, it certainly has seen better days.
But with a bit of TLC this barrier will sit there and operate forever.
Failing that, new Barriers start from only £500!! A bargain.

A right mess or what! If I'm not mistaken, this barrier needs a new barrier pole and high bar curtain assembly.
How on earth did it get damaged (snapped) right up there? Clearly it will require a complete new arm let’s just hope no one was in the vicinity when it decided to part company with the drive cabinet.
Not to worry though a couple of hours and it will be as good as new again.

I could be mistaken, but I dont think the sliding gate closing post was orignally installed at this angle!
It must have a good whack as its pulled its foundation bolts clear out of the ground. I'm just hoping that the Newgate van just around the cornor is there to put the sistuation right, and is not there because it caused the damage.
A damaged post is one thing, but a damaged service van is another thing all together.

How many bits and pieces can you bolt onto a sliding gate stanchion?
We count a prox switch, drive unit, two control panels, traffic lights and a CCTV camera. But don't worry there's still room for a couple of more parts if required.
It takes me back to my childhood, remember “Buckeroo” it would be amusing if the gate stopped sharply and everything shot off, fortunately Newgate products are very robust and reliable and don’t have that problem

The rising kerb road blocker installation looks as though it's been clubbing. The traffic light still looks as though it’s doing the “Hokey Cokey” and the access reading is halfway through pass the parcel. The LED traffic light is impressive though, It wouldn't look out of place at the 1970s disco! Seriously though, this installation is missing an annual service contract (not every customer chooses to take one). Poorly maintained equipment will lead to operational problems. A Newgate heavy duty rising on barrier recently involved in a collision with something considerably larger. It is remarkable that that cabinet (despite pole and cover damage) is still perfectly upright. It must have had a good old whack as the balance weight assembly is now at 30° from where it should be and even more impressively the output shaft attached to the weights is a bent 50 mm diameter steel bar!! I wonder what the front of the lorry looks like?

How on earth can you damage a gate like this?
Another day, another supermarket service yard and another damaged gate. We have a theory that supermarket lorry drivers don’t like vehicle gates very much and they are on a mission to kill as many as they can.
Perhaps they even put graphics on their trucks to prove their kills!

Two new push button consoles

Two new push button consoles for my clients existing electric traffic barriers.
My client, one of the biggest sports wear suppliers in the uk, has had a Challenger Barrier for over five years. According to him, and I quote ‘They have been faultless in operation and are up and down more time than a whores knickers’!
However, the big old heavy fingers of the security guard have taken their toll on the push button consoles. In over thirty years of selling barriers I have never seen one held together with cellotape before!! Must have run out of glue!
New (Heavy Duty) ones are being made, as we speak!!

This poor old barrier pole has had some stick. Not only has its "Stop" sign been smashed but look at the bend in it. I'm all into 'alternative' medicines (acupuncture, poultices, etc) but to pack an aluminium tube in rock salt will never straighten it in a million years! Sorry lads, but this time you will have to ring Newgate’s Service Department (Tel 01636 704000) and speak to the team nicely about a replacement. Barrier foundation blocks are usually a mass of concrete cast in at ground level. This stone clad obelisk complete with water feature & two tone colour scheme beats the lot. I'm also scratching my head to understand what type of vehicle this traffic barrier intends to stop!
Unless you have a car transporter sat on the back of an arctic, anything could drive under this barrier pole!

If anybody was ever caught “Banged to Rights” it must have been this guy.
To break the barrier is one thing, but then to try and sneak it onto your lorry to lose the evidence is another thing.
Newgate Traffic Barriers are good, but if you are determined to break them and then steal them, that’s another thing entirely.
Next time we will install a road blocker, and then we will see who wins and loses!!

Missing Car Park Barriers

Honestly officer the two barriers were definitely there last night when I went to bed.
Police are now trying to trace the whereabouts of a red pickup truck (yes the same one as seen before) to assist them with their enquiries.
Removing lead from roofs, drain covers and road signs for scrap is one thing, but to remove traffic barriers and even gates for scrap is a different thing altogether.
Maybe we should consider building gates & barriers out of recycled plastic, and then nobody would take them!!!

Obviously when this client ordered a heavy duty barrier he must have forgotten to ask for the boom to be tailored and customized to what they were looking for. So when they first saw this barrier on site they realized what had happened.

Lorries trucks and vans galore, if you've got it why not hit our gate with it. Now I'm no expert but usually lorries wait at the entrance until the gate is fully open before driving through. However not in this case, this damaged gate took more than just one blow from a large vehicle it took several before the gate cried for help. Remind me not to shop in this town, the wind must have been strong on this day because it ripped an innocent traffic barrier out of the ground with the foundation still attached, smashing it straight in to a fence causing major damage. Wash Day

Obviously this client values their gate so much that when someone uses it they must make sure that it is spotless. However when this client polished and cleaned it too often the worst possible scenario happened the gate start to shrink in the wash. So as a result people didn't need to go through it they just climbed over it.

The Electric Swing Gate

This electric Swing Gate received a good old belt the other day and is no longer usable. Whilst a new gate is being made to replace this one. The client has made use of it by turning this broken down and useless gate into a public noticeboard!! If you read the advertising closely you will find, 1. An activity day and 2. Organic horse manure. I didn't think that our drive units were so underpowered that we needed help (even organic) from others!!!

Car Park Barrier Needs Help

We should have realised that our newly installed Traffic barrier wouldn't last long at this site. As you can see the barrier seems to be the victim of deadly quicksand!! Another couple of days and this barrier will cease to exist. This has also raised another issue with these baffled and confused caravan park owners because they went to bed knowing they were 20 caravans on the park and woke up the next morning with only two left!!

Now the really scary part is where are the people inside them.

Its all very well selling a traffic barrier, but what aftermarket accessories can it have?
A distinctive red and white pole is a good start, Even a red and green traffic light is useful addition.
I cant quite see the two 50 gallon oil drums acting as a tip support catching on!!
Seriously though, all of our electric or manual rising arm barriers can have non standard colour schemes, Stop Signs, PVC Half Curtains, and of course the correct tip supports.

1. Find a large planter (Dont worry about the shape, size or colour)
2. Instead of growmore, just add concrete.

6. Sit Back & wait.

The Banana Gate!

The beurocrats in Brussels would certainly not allow this gate to be sold. If they insist on straight bananas what chance have we got with this recently installed Tracked Sliding Gate.

Naturally, no body saw who did it, but the gate took a hell of a belt.

It may be bent, but unlike any gate hit by a "A-Team" van, its still standing.

The "Recession Designed Barrier Pole"

We all know that time are hard at this moment, but this particular end user has found a unique and cost cutting alternative to the usual aluminium barrier pole on his electric traffic barrier.
True its:-
a. Lightweight (Probably Balsa Wood!)
b. Structurally Re-Inforced (Copper Pipe Strapped to it)
c. Highly visable (Red Tape Holding the Copper Pipe to the balsa wood!)

But what happens when:-
a. It has to stop unauthorised visitors!
b. When the wind blows.
c. When a pigeon sits on it!

This one is definitely NOT repairable, and if the sign in the background is anything to go by, you can guess where this barrier will end its days.

Perhaps this Traffic Barrier should have been painted yellow and disguised as a bollard!!! Then they might not have hit it.

A "Picture Postcard" Traffic Barrier!

Situated in the little hamlet of "Sleepy in the Hollow", this beautifully presented electric traffic barrier, in a pastel shade of " Looks Like Magnolia" blends in very subtly with its surroundings.

Perhaps the Barrier pole has been colour co-ordinated for "Horsey Traffic" and is used for show jumping at the weekends.

I have heard of "Flat Pack" but this is ridiculous!
Answers on a post card please as to why this Car Park Barrier Access Reader Post should want a lie down.
Could it be for:-
a)The Stramlined Effect.
b)Less wind resistance
c)Not very tall users
d)Energy saving

This site needs a whole new electric sliding gate!

Not content with using JCB diggers to extract cash machines from buildings, the new threat is to use a trolly full of green plastic trays to knock down a sliding gate!!
Although Newgate's Gates's are some of the most robust and structurally sound gates made in the UK, even we know our limitations.

Just imagine what damage a shopping trolley could do to our swing gates or even rising kerbs!!

Challenger Car Park Barrier fixing bolts cost in the region of £1.00 each. To save costs, this customer fixed the barrier to the floor with four concrete blocks instead.
Further cost savings were made when he tapped into his neighbours electricity supply.

When the client asked for a Car Park Barrier, I don't think the intention was to park the car on the Barrier!!

Today I went to Scotland to sell Seven Hi-Viz Yellow Car Park Barriers.
No Body Told Me:-
1. It was snowing
2 There was no Road
3.There was a gaint Lego set in the way!!!
4.There appears to be four Gnomes burried upto there pointed caps in a snow drift.
Conclusion - Ill wait until it thaws and have another go.

Electric Swing Gates come in all shapes and sizes, but I cant remember the last time we had one with a kink in the middle! Was the drawing office CAD machine having a bad day? Maybe the welders on this Swing Gate were on the night shift working in the dark. Or may be the client wanted a customised gate, he only needed to ask, Newgate can manufacture any Swing Gate or Sliding Gate to suite requirements just ask.

Todays Question........................Is someone or something trying to get in or out of our car park barrier?

The service department staff think with a lick of paint, some body filler and some brown sticky tape we could have this traffic barrier looking as good as new in no time, Im not sure.

Alternatively, we could try selling a new range of car park barriers with the "Distressed" look.

It seems to work with the DIY trade!!!!!!

After visiting a costumer today I came across one of our Car Park Barriers, however this one had been modified by the owner! A see through lid, may be the owner wanted to see into the mechanism? I'm not sure if the "Chinese" Graphics on the side of the barrier will catch on though!

"Honest Boss, Nobody told me a Traffic Barrier had been Installed" said the driver of this van. Looking at the height of the van, the driver would not have cleared the building, let alone the traffic barrier. Looks like there going to need a replacment barrier arm!

He does'nt think we can see him hiding in the bushes, but did the big brown truck break the traffic barrier? A new curtain and pole and this car park barrier should be as good as new.

Today I went shopping to currys, not to buy a plasma TV, I went to sell them something!

The boss asked if I wanted to take a collegue with me, being the super salesman that I am I said no and tackled the job single handedly. Half a dozen barriers, blockers, and traffic lights later the deal was done.

Now thanks to me, Currys is a more secure site, job well done.
